Brief History

Virginia Pride was started by a group of loyal and active community members in the mid-70’s. The goal was to bring awareness of the community and to promote diversity while enabling unity among the Richmond LGBT community members. The organization struggled to gain momentum and mostly achieved a sense of presence by hosting the annual Pride celebration here in Richmond.

Over its lifespan, there have been many organizational shifts in order to accommodate an ever-changing community. We have had different names and members. The original organization was made up of mostly men, thus the events seemed skewed to the Gay male population.

In recent years, Virginia Pride has sought to incorporate more and more diversity of all kinds.  We have built a diverse coalition of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Allied heterosexual representation, and we continue to equip ourselves with comprehensive knowledge and resources to successfully serve ALL of the LGBT community.

In 2008, we applied for and received our 501(c)(3) charitable status with the IRS, making contributions to Virginia Pride tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

For 2014, VA Pride will begin to extend itself fully into the Commonwealth, seeking to create an "umbrella" organization to unify and support other LGBT organizations in Virginia.
